I really liked this book. A exciting adventure quite different from the Pendergast series by the same authors. There was an interesting mix of many characters for an action-adventure book. I liked the pacing, from the slower set-ups and introductions, to the very fast-moving later sections. Very little of the book was predictable. As a retired engineer myself, I enjoyed the technical, logistic, and preparation aspects of the extremely difficult mission. But I did roll my eyes when the planning fell short and some ludicrous MacGyver hacks took place. A sub-plot involving combat with a foreign navy ship worked well for me. Really added to the suspense and action. I was very pleased with the ending.

The only weakness for me was that the character development and background story of the "EES" people fell a little short. Some of these characters do appear in later Preston & Child books and we then get to know more about them. There is a follow-up book, "Beyond the Ice Limit", which is also a very good book.

The Ice Limit (Audible Audio Edition) Douglas Preston Lincoln Child Scott Brick Hachette Audio Books Reviews

This, to me, is probably one of the best stories yet by this duo. I loved their first book, The Relic, and couldn't put it down. since then, IMO, they have swung from almost hit to full-on miss. With "The Ice Limit" they have a winner. I could not stop reading. Not because it was so enthralling but because I wanted to know WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? They have done a masterful job of leading the reader, along with the characters, on treasure hunt.

Yes, some of the characters are one-dimensional (the Comandante of the Chilean destroyer comes instantly to mind) and almost cartoonish in their stereotypical actions but every good action story needs a villain so I was willing to let it ride. It's difficult to come up with a bad guy that far South on the planet!

I had anticipated part of the ending but not the final de nu monde. I had an inkling but was only close, not on target. So now I'm reading the first Gideon Crew novel as "the Ice Limit" appears to be #3 in the series.

If you like James Rollins, then this one should please you as well.
I've been a big fan of Preston and Child's fiction since THE RELIC, in which their now famous FBI Agent, AXL Pendergast, makes his first appearance, but is not the star of the show. Since then I have read all of the Pendergast novels, most of them wonderful, a couple oK, and one or two, as i have reviewed, seeming to "jump the shark". Somehow I missed this 2000 stand-alone novel that has all the characteristics that made most of the AXL Pendergast novels so wonderful. An interesting premise, interesting characters with decent development and distinct voices, and an once it gets going, an unrelenting fast and accelerating pace.

Eli Glinjn is the chief of an engineering firm noted for never failing. He is hired by one of the world's richest men to retrieve what is believed to be the largest intact meteorite from an island location in the far south Atlantic. That's the short hand-no spoilers description. Needless to say the project turns out to be far more complicated than even genius engineer Eli Glinn and his team imagine. There are elements of seamanship, politics, geology, physics and more than turn this into a huge potboiler of suspense, death, bravery and wits, all within sight of Antarctica.

I'm not sure how i missed this in 2000, but I have already started the long-awaited sequel, BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT, which turns out to be the 4th in the P&C's GIDEON CREW series, one that I have avoided mostly because of the mixed reviews of the first entry. However, the 16 year wait between THE ICE LIMIT (referring to extremely perilous lattitudes south of 60 degrees S) and BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT promises to be another great novel combining P&C's trademark well-researched sci-fi adventure with chills and spills. I don't often give 5 stars. THE ICE LIMIT is worth it.

Highly Recommended.

I thought I'd read this book when it was first published - in 2001 - 15 years ago. But I decided to read it again to refresh my memory before starting the Advanced Reading Copy I have of BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT, coming out soon. And as I started reading it I realized I had never read it before. And I'm glad because it was so much fun delving into it now.

I don't know why I read so many books about cold regions because I HATE being cold but the Arctic, Alaska, Antarctica, Mt. Everest - I've read books about all of them and been fascinated.

"What is this Ice Limit? It’s where the freezing waters around Antarctica meet the warmer northern waters of the Atlantic and Pacific. Oceanographers call it the Antarctic Convergence. It’s known for impenetrable fogs and, of course, extremely dangerous ice."

This was just the kind of thriller I like. Bigger than life adventures, good guys and bad guys (and some that were maybe middle ground), a stunning, interesting locale, and a scientific mystery.

The largest meteorite ever discovered has been found on an island west of the southern tip of Chile and one of the richest men in the world wants it - to display in museum he's building. I love the engineering crew and the rest of the crew that gets put together to bring this artifact back to the U.S.

The book ended on a questioning note and people have had to wait 15 years to get answers. At least I hope I get answers since I'm starting on BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT next.
